Ope­nAI and Google are con­tin­u­ous­ly improv­ing the large lan­guage mod­els (LLMs) behind Chat­G­PT and Gem­i­ni to give them a greater abil­i­ty to gen­er­ate human-like text. But that capa­bil­i­ty hasn’t made its way into the pro­duc­tized ver­sion of the mod­el yet — per­haps because the mech­a­nism is more com­plex than how apps such as Chat­G­PT gen­er­ate images. Rather than feed prompts to an image gen­er­a­tor (likeDALL-E 3, in ChatGPT’s case), Gem­i­ni out­puts images “native­ly,” with­out an inter­me­di­ary step. Google intro­duced Gem­i­ni 2.0 Flash on Dec. 11, 2024, in an exper­i­men­tal pre­view through Ver­tex AI Gem­i­ni API and AI Stu­dio. Gem­i­ni 2.0 Flash is twice the speed of 1.5 Pro and has new capa­bil­i­ties, such as mul­ti­modal input and out­put, and long con­text under­stand­ing.

As of May 2024, GPT-4o is an avail­able default in the free ver­sion of Chat­G­PT. A more robust access to GPT-4o as well as GPT-4 is avail­able in the paid sub­scrip­tion ver­sions of Chat­G­PT Plus, Chat­G­PT Team and Chat­G­PT Enter­prise. GPT-4 was gen­er­al­ly con­sid­ered the most advanced GenAI mod­el when it became avail­able, but Google Gem­i­ni Advanced pro­vid­ed it with a for­mi­da­ble rival. Chat­G­PT and Gem­i­ni are large­ly respon­si­ble for the con­sid­er­able buzz around GenAI, which uses data from machine learn­ing mod­els to answer ques­tions and cre­ate images, text and videos.

That’s com­pared to the 24,000 words (or 48 pages) the vanil­la Gem­i­ni app can han­dle. That opened the door for oth­er search engines to license Chat­G­PT, where­as Gem­i­ni sup­ports only Google. Both are geared to make search more nat­ur­al and help­ful as well as syn­the­size new infor­ma­tion in their answers. In oth­er coun­tries where the plat­form is avail­able, the min­i­mum age is 13 unless oth­er­wise spec­i­fied by local laws. When Gem­i­ni Ultra is avail­able, it will bring more fine-tuned func­tion­al­i­ty to Bard and oth­er ser­vices, thanks to rein­force­ment learn­ing from human feed­back. And as we bring Bard to more regions and lan­guages over time, we’ll con­tin­ue to use our AI Prin­ci­ples as a guide, incor­po­rate user feed­back, and take steps to pro­tect people’s pri­va­cy and data. Chat GPT is the arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence-pow­ered chat­bot cre­at­ed by Ope­nAI with invest­ments from Microsoft (MSFT). Gem­i­ni is also our most flex­i­ble mod­el yet — able to effi­cient­ly run on every­thing from data cen­ters to mobile devices. Its state-of-the-art capa­bil­i­ties will sig­nif­i­cant­ly enhance the way devel­op­ers and enter­prise cus­tomers build and scale with AI.

Mean­while, a recent poll by Mor­gan Stan­ley found that Chat­G­PT and Bard, two AI chat­bots, were used sur­pris­ing­ly low. The sur­vey, which had 2,000 par­tic­i­pants and was per­formed in April, focused on AI adop­tion and people’s readi­ness to employ new AI tech­nolo­gies. Google has intro­duced its own AI chat­bot as a rival to OpenAI’s Chat­G­PT and Microsoft’s Bing Chat amid fierce rival­ry in the AI busi­ness. The Google chatbot’s launch start­ed in March and includ­ed 180 nations, includ­ing the US and the UK. As for Ope­nAI, after some board­room dra­ma, we know the launch of its AI app store is being pushed back to 2024. Google already has an ecosys­tem that Bard can plug into, while Ope­nAI is try­ing to build out its ecosys­tem.

Microsoft backed Ope­nAI at the start of 2023 by pledg­ing a mul­ti­mil­lion-dol­lar, mul­ti­year invest­ment to accel­er­ate OpenAI’s devel­op­ment of its AI tech­nol­o­gy. Ope­nAI intro­duced Chat­G­PT in Novem­ber 2022, spark­ing a tremen­dous amount of inter­est in arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence. Chat­G­PT gained so much atten­tion that gen­er­a­tive AI (GenAI) became a dom­i­nant theme in the tech world in 2023. Accord­ing to CNET, which test­ed the Bard, Chat­G­PT and Microsoft’s AI-pow­ered Bing, the Google chat­bot was the least reli­able. Bard is now known as Gem­i­ni, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gem­i­ni Advanced with Ultra 1.0.

“Now with Gem­i­ni, we’re one step clos­er to bring­ing you the best AI col­lab­o­ra­tor in the world,” Hsiao not­ed. That at least seems more hon­est, as it’s an admis­sion that Bard is not quite there yet. So the DPC is pre­sum­ably intend­ing to chip any learn­ings into that effort — where/if appro­pri­ate. “This high­lights the impor­tance of a rig­or­ous test­ing process, some­thing that we’re kick­ing off this week with our Trust­ed Tester pro­gram,” a spokesper­son from Google told The Reg­is­ter in a state­ment. About 10 per­cent of Alphabet’s mar­ket val­ue – some $120 bil­lion – was wiped out this week after Google proud­ly pre­sent­ed Bard, its answer to Microsoft’s next-gen AI offer­ings, and the sys­tem bun­gled a sim­ple ques­tion.

But Google claims that Bard is improv­ing in mea­sur­able ways, par­tic­u­lar­ly in areas like math and pro­gram­ming. We said in May that we want­ed to make Bard more wide­ly avail­able, includ­ing in the Euro­pean Union, and that we would do so respon­si­bly, after engage­ment with experts, reg­u­la­tors and pol­i­cy­mak­ers. The Gem­i­ni archi­tec­ture has been enhanced to process lengthy con­tex­tu­al sequences across dif­fer­ent data types, includ­ing text, audio and video. Google Deep­Mind uses effi­cient atten­tion mech­a­nisms in the trans­former decoder to help the mod­els process long con­texts, span­ning dif­fer­ent modal­i­ties.
